When a piece found its shape

Before the catalogue and finished screens, we had to get the basics right: pieces that fit together.

Pencil sketch of a puzzle grid and two neighboring shaped pieces
An editorial drawing inspired by the early technical work, not a surviving sketch from August.

On August 12, the first puzzle model appeared in the repository. It stored each piece’s position, its neighbours and the edges on the outside of the puzzle. There was no picture yet, and nothing to drag on screen. We started with the grid itself.

Next came the shaped edges. Drawing neighbouring pieces separately can leave their borders out of alignment. We used shared rules for each tab and its matching socket, then checked the fit numerically. The test screen now showed a grid that looked like a jigsaw.

From outline to image

Adding an image brought another check. Matching outlines are not enough: each piece must show the right part of the original picture. Otherwise the edges meet but a line in the artwork jumps at the join. We checked both the shape and the image position within it.

We made the pencil illustration for this journal to explain that work. It is not a surviving screenshot of the first build.
